He's the actor who gave Gene Wilder the shoe polish in "Silver Streak." He was in "Carmen Jones," "Stormy Weather," "Cabin in the Sky," "Mad, Mad, Mad Mad World," and more. He created the voice of Brer Bear in Disney's Song of the South, and the Splash Mountain ride at Disneyland. Nick Stewart was a featuured performer in stage, radio, movies, and television: He played Lightnin' in the Amos 'n Andy TV show in the 1950s. The Ebony Showcase has been a charity since 1964. They founded the Ebony Showcase Theatre in 1950.
He and his wife, Edna, were pioneers in legitimate theater in the United States. He began a career as a performer in the 1930s at the Hoofers Club and the Cotton Club. He often said that most of his peers in Harlem ended up either dead or in jail but his life was changed because he learned to dance.
His parents were recent immigrants from Barbados, British West Indies, where he spent his early childhood. Nick Stewart, was born in Harlem, New York on March 15, 1910.
